Washington, D.C. – This Earth Month, the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) is proud to reaffirm its dedication to sustainable commuting practices among its employees in the Washington, D.C. area. Following our designation as a Gold Transportation All-Star by goDCgo in April 2023, PADF has continued to innovate and expand on our Transportation Demand Management (TDM) plan.
In July 2023, PADF implemented an employer-paid partial subsidy program for Capital Bikeshare memberships in which 10 PADF staff now participate. Later, in September 2023, PADF held a Sustainable Commute Challenge in which 16 employees participated and 13 finished the full challenge, with one individual giving up their car for the entire challenge. The participating staff completed a total of 78 sustainable commutes which included: 20 miles traveled by carpool, 100 miles traveled on foot, 140 miles traveled by bike, and 461.5 traveled by train or bus. These initiatives encouraged our staff to embrace active commutes which reduce carbon emissions, encourage daily movement, reduce air pollution and congestion, and increase staff engagement. The impact of these efforts were recognized by goDCgo in a Success Story published in December 2023 which heightened PADF’s role as a leader in employer-offered benefits for sustainable commuting.
In our ongoing journey towards sustainability, 28 PADF staff members are currently participating in the goDCgo Commuter Challenge. In the first two months of the challenge, PADF staff have taken 2,400+ alternative trips, traveled 29,639+ alternative miles, and saved 11.1 tons of CO2. 29% of trips have been walks, 24% have been on transit, and 11.7% have been by bike.
Through these efforts, PADF supports the environmental health of the D.C. metropolitan area and the personal health of our staff. We remain committed to implementing sustainable solutions that benefit our planet, our staff, and the people we serve.
