The Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) and the Secretary of State for Justice and Human Rights of the State of Pará (SEJUDH) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for closer collaboration to strengthen human rights.
The MoU aims to strengthen the state of Pará’s response to forced labor cases in the production chain of the cattle ranching industry and to give greater visibility to the work already carried out by different state offices and its economic and sustainable development projects.
Proposed activities in the plan of work include campaigns to raise awareness and provide education on human rights. Meetings, conferences, seminars, and other events will also be organized to promote policies for eradicating forced labor and to educate city employees. One example is the first Seminar on Forced Labor in the Livestock and Gold Mining Production Chains in the state of Pará, co-hosted by PADF, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and the State Commission for the Eradication of Slave Labor (COETRAE/PA) in Belém, Pará, in November 2022.
In addition to highlighting the growth of PADF’s presence in the region, the MoU will provide technical assistance for SEJUDH to improve protection mechanisms for survivors of forced labor and will strengthen COETRAE.
